Nexus 5 lives on as Google says goodbye to the Nexus 7
With both the
Nexus 6 smartphone and
Nexus 9 tablet having now formally entered the realms of reality, Google is killing off some of its most beloved devices.
However, although both the
Nexus 7 and
Nexus 10 tablets are being axed in order to make way for the new
8.9-inch iPad mini rival, the
Nexus 5 looks set to live on as the company?s more pocket-friendly smartphone offering.
An update to the Google devices website has shown the new
Nexus 9 and
Nexus 6 listed alongside the
Nexus 5 and new
Nexus Player media streamer. There is no sign of the former leaders of the Android slate space.
While some might mourn the loss of the
Nexus 7, a device which finally gave Apple a rival in the tablet space, the survival of the
Nexus 5 is set to give Google some much needed variety in the smartphone sector.
Although handsets are edging towards increasingly oversized screens, the
5.96-inch QHD panel handed to the
Nexus 6 is massive by any means.
This gargantuan design makes the
Nexus 6 considerable larger than both its leading rivals, the 5.5-inch
iPhone 6 Plus and the 5.7-inch
Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and comfortably dwarfs the 5-inch
Nexus 5.
Despite a confirmed release date and pricing still up in the air, Google has unveiled the Motorola made
Nexus 6 as a new powerhouse of the smartphone space.
Pairing its oversized design with a
2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor and a 13-megapixel OIS enhanced camera, the
Nexus 6 will also become the first phone to run the newly confirmed
Android 5.0 Lollipop OS direct from the box.
